The way I work

The elements of overlapping, penetrations, cracks, faults, resonances and compaction exist in nature and may be read like a language. Without being an image of nature, elements of this language flow into many of my works.
An intuitive inner picture is frequently the genesis of a sculpture and it finds its form in the process of being extracted from the stone. The interaction between the outer form of the stone and the inner picture allows the latter to grow and be transformed.
During the sculpturing process the interplay of the inner picture and the developing outer form also causes the inner picture to change.

Roman Müller 2011

A stone is like a mirror

Roman Müller peels off the hull to reveal the form, which arises out of his inner experience. The stone resists. The discrepancy between the inner image and the figure hewn from the stone is simultaneously the challenge and the allure of the work. Processes are the key. Geological activity has formed the workpiece, the sculptor's workmanship transforms it into a body. The work develops in dialogue with the workpiece. The confrontation does not end with the last blow of the chisel, but continues – in tactile contact with the sculpture and in its contemplation. Just like in a mirror.
